BMW India launches the new 7 Series range with the locally produced i7 electric sedan at ₹1.95 crore. India becomes the only country outside Germany to manufacture the electric 7 Series. WLTP range up to 728km.

BMW India has launched the new 7 Series range with the locally produced BMW i7 electric sedan, marking a significant milestone in Indian luxury automotive manufacturing. Prices start at ₹1.95 crore (ex-showroom) for both the BMW 740 M Sport (petrol) and the BMW i7 eDrive50 xDrive M Sport (electric). The range-topping i7 M70 xDrive is priced at ₹2.65 crore.

India Becomes Second Country to Manufacture Electric 7 Series

With local production of the i7 at BMW Group Plant Chennai, India becomes the only country outside Germany to manufacture the electric 7 Series. This is a strategic move that reduces costs compared to fully imported models and positions BMW competitively against Mercedes-Benz and Audi in the luxury EV space.

The launch event in Gurugram featured Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, who has been named the Brand Voice for BMW India — signalling BMW's intent to appeal to a younger, aspirational luxury audience.

Impressive Electric Performance

The BMW i7 eDrive50 xDrive produces 455 hp and 660 Nm of torque from its rear-mounted motor. Its 112.5 kWh battery provides a claimed WLTP range of up to 728 km — a 125 km improvement over the outgoing model. The sedan accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds with a top speed of 210 km/h.

For those seeking maximum performance, the i7 M70 xDrive uses dual electric motors to produce 680 hp and up to 1,100 Nm of torque, reaching 0-100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Despite this performance, it still offers a WLTP range of 686 km.

Charging Capabilities

The i7 supports 250 kW DC fast charging, which can charge the battery from 10% to 80% in just 28 minutes. In practical terms, this means you can add up to 235 km of range in just 10 minutes at a compatible fast charger. A 22 kW AC charger takes approximately six hours for a full charge. BMW is also including a complimentary Wallbox charger with installation for all i7 buyers.

Luxury Features

The new 7 Series introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X and BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects information across the lower section of the windscreen. The cabin features a 17.9-inch central display and a new 14.6-inch passenger screen. Rear passengers get Executive Lounge seats and a 31.3-inch 8K BMW Theatre Screen paired with a Bowers and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos.

Exterior design elements include the illuminated BMW Iconic Glow Kidney Grille, BMW Individual crystal headlights with Swarovski glass elements, flush-fitting door handles, and newly designed rear lights.

What This Means for Indian Luxury EVs

BMW's decision to locally manufacture the i7 in India sends a strong signal about the maturity of the Indian luxury EV market. The 728 km range addresses range anxiety head-on, and local production should make the i7 more accessible than fully imported rivals. With Mercedes-Benz and Audi also expanding their electric portfolios, the luxury EV space in India is set to become increasingly competitive through 2026 and 2027.
